Lamb in the Wolves’ Den The first part of an illuminating interview—Tony Cummings talks to Disco producer IAN LEVINE. “I DON’T want my name associated with Northern Soul anymore.” It’s September, 1976. The despondency in Ian Levine’s dentist-drill voice is better than a calendar. In September 1975 the “Blackpool Maestro’s” voice was excitedly burbling as the Exciters “Reaching For The Best” rose up the British Top 50. In January ‘76 it was defiantly prophetic as Evelyn Thomas and L. J. Johnson gave the 21-year-old songwriter/producer his second and third British hits and Levine’s “specially recorded for the Northern discos” music seemed unassailable. Now Levine’s voice is despondent. Eight flops in a row. Unremitting criticism from the purist elements of the Northern Scene. Incredible tales of gangster-style ripoffs. And a company, Voltafine Productions, £20,000 in red. Yet, despite all his problems, Levine still looks to tomorrow. “The record I’ve got out. . .

Today, the music world mourns the loss of a true pioneer and iconic voice, Evelyn Thomas, who passed away on July 21, 2024. Evelyn was not just a singer – she was a driving force in the Hi-NRG scene, an artist who defined an era and whose legacy will continue to inspire generations. Evelyn’s journey began in Chicago in 1975, when she was discovered by young producer Ian Levine. Reflecting on their first meeting, Ian Levine said, “I first met her in 1975, in Chicago, when I was only twenty-two years old and she was only twenty-three. I immediately signed her as an artist and we recorded two Northern Soul songs, ‘Weak Spot’ and ‘Doomsday’, which were released on Twentieth Century Records, and both of which made the UK pop charts, and resulted in Evelyn flying to England to appear on Top of the Pops, in February of 1976.” Her. . .

Users can upload their tracks to the system, which then identifies potential illegal use by matching content with major streaming services like Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, Napster, and Deezer. Abeyesinhe highlighted the significant issue of illegal music exploitation, noting that the streaming and downloading market, valued at over $30 billion, could see up to a third of its content exploited illegally. TCAT Protect offers a seven-day free trial where users can upload their music, which TCAT then fingerprints and matches against available digital streaming platforms (DSPs). By Michael Infante, CEO & Founder of One Media iP Vinyl and a minor comeback for collectors One Media is piloting a Vinyl LP deal with four of its nostalgic digital releases, now being made available for collectors on vinyl LP. We have said it before, but who would have thought vinyl would outlive the newcomer ‘music download’ – but as Apple shut its door on MP3’s as a download format, the PVC (polyvinyl chloride) makes a non-green return. You just can’t kill off a format that has been around for over 135 years. In 1887, German-American inventor Emile Berliner developed lateral-cut flat discs to be played on the gramophone, similar in use and appearance to the vinyl records we know today. The last few months has pointed us all in a different direction to add confusion to a changing world. Energy prices soared in the winter and inflation ran wild, giving rise to industrial action, strikes, NHS workers being turned from heroes’ to zeros in government thinking (I did not see any of us banging saucepans whilst they were attempting to right wage claims from over three years ago) and lawyers going on strike (frankly no one gave a damn here, especially us in the music industry). During this period, we have seen the birth of AI and the world it appears is doomed as Arnie returns with Skynet to exterminate us all. Well again, quite frankly if we are all going to hell in handcart it may as well roll out like a Hollywood blockbuster instead of ‘bad cold’ that Covid has turned into. TCAT CEO, Nick Stewart, spoke to MusicWeek about his distinguished career and signing U2 to Island Records in 1980. Nick also commented on the IFPI’s latest Global Music Report, which showed continuing global growth: “For the industry to continue this growth trajectory, legitimate music rights owners – such as labels, artists and writers – must be protected from evolving threats and fairly recognised for their work,” said the TCAT CEO. “Of these risks, piracy on digital stores is the most systemic. It is an insidious practice that remains a lucrative illegal business causing the music industry to lose eye-popping amounts in revenue every year. Pirates pick the pockets of legitimate rights owners, with a total disregard for their creative and intellectual property.” Read the full article here.

Our bestest friend Dave Cash died a week ago, aged 74. Dave was the voice behind all of One Media’s corporate videos. He spent hundreds of hours with us making the Dave Cash Collection, a selection of music (the largest choice ever by a British DJ) for digital distribution. Dave became a great mate to us and when he married Sara we knew he had found real happiness. Our heart felt sympathies go to Sara and Mr Beesley. Dave needs no introduction or farewell from us and in his immortal words “he will be back after this short break”, “Groovy Baby”. We will really miss him, but his voice will live on… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piyTVBiS1KM
